You almost chose it, the colour, the layout, the line that made you smile, and then you didn't. It wasn't "tasteful" enough. But pause on that for a second: tasteful according to whom?

Taste feels like truth. It's mostly agreement.

We talk about good taste as if it's a fixed thing you either have or lack. But almost every "timeless" choice was once somebody's risky one. The trend you now find obvious was, not long ago, the thing experts called wrong. Taste is a consensus that has been around long enough to feel like objectivity.

That's not a reason to ignore it. It's a reason to stop being intimidated by it.

How much of your taste is yours, and how much is just what you were told to admire?

Build your own instead of borrowing everyone's

Your taste develops the same way your voice does: by paying attention to your own reactions rather than overriding them. What do you keep coming back to? What makes you slightly uncomfortable in an interesting way? What do you secretly find boring that everyone praises?

A brand with borrowed taste looks correct and forgettable. A brand with its own taste looks like a decision. We help people make that kind of decision, the work that looks like a point of view rather than a consensus. If that's the kind of brand you want, talk to us: contact@nicheplus.nl.
